Truck Crashes, Kills Ten People
A Police report says the truck crashed into the stall in the central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle at high speed, careering into the roadside eatery and nearby homes in Barela area of the Jabalpur district, some 300 kilometer from State capital Bhopal.
The District deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG B.S. Chouhan told Newsmen that about ten bodies were recovered at the scene.
DIG Chouhan said hundreds of angry residents descended on the accident site, pelting stones at Police and torching a patrol car, noting that reinforcements were immediately called to restore order.
It would be recalled that a truck driver was killed in a neighbouring district last week after he rammed into a house, injuring six.
India has a grim record in road safety, with nearly 150,000 people killed in 2016, according to Government data, as authorities say an estimated 30 percent of Indian driving licences are fake.
Experts blamed poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving for the high number of fatal accidents that shave nearly three percent off India’s GDP annually.
